Airspace classification in Spain is in accordance with “Air Traffic Services”.
The ATM airspace in which Spain provides air traffic service, is classified in controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
The controlled airspace includes control areas, airways and control zones and, depending on type of fight and air traffic service provided, is classified as class A,B,C,D, and E.
The uncontrolled airspace includes the rest of ATS airspace and, depending on type of flight and air traffic service provided, is classified in class F and G.
Where the proposed ATS airspace adjoin vertically, e.g. one above the other, flights at a common level will comply with requirements of, and be given services applicable to, the less restrictive class of airspace.
Where a proposed ATS airspace is included in other one, in part or totally, flights within this airspace would comply with requirements of, and be given services applicable to, the most restrictive class of airspace except of VFR sectors and corridors.
In applying these criteria, class B airspace shall therefore be considered less restrictive than class A, class C less restrictive than class B, etc.
Visual corridors:
– If an ATC clearance is necessary to proceed on them, VRF corridors are class B, C or D depending on the ATS classification of the airspace where they are located.
– If an ATC clearance is not necessary to proceed on them, VFR corridors are class E.
In order to provide air traffic services, dangerous and restricted areas:
– are not classified airspace during their activity period, unless general air traffic has been authorized to enter the area, and
– out of the activity period, and when general air traffic has been authorized to enter the area during their activity period, they will have the same class as the airspace where they are located.
All airspace within Madrid, Barcelona and Canarias FIR/UIR not included in the items above are class G.
