Design principles editing 3

Okay so we’ve grouped our clips we’ve worked out the three different ways that we can sequence in together.

We now need to work out how we actually synchronize the clips with the music.

And this is pretty straightforward.

You’re going to mark up your music and you’re going to mark it up for where the changes are happening.

So where the music is pulsing and we’ll talk in more detail about that in the How To section on the software later on in the course.

But the important thing is is that you change clips on the beat and you need to do this as precisely as you possibly can.

It needs to be really refined.

What we’re doing.

Slightly off.

Then the viewer will automatically see that and it will give them a little mental jolt to beat it.

So that is the design principle.

Number four is change clips to the music.

Precisely.

The next thing that you can do with synchronizing to the music is that you’re going to have big groups of clips all playing together.

Part of your music is going to be big section changes in the music where there’s going to be a drop a crescendo it’s going to go to the chorus.

Something significant is going to happen and you going get four or five of these in any three minute music clip design principle number five is that you should change your groups of clips the themes that they have been following at those music section changes that’s when you’ve got an editing excuse to stop showing people lots of greenery and start showing them some notes for instance.

So if we look in this example here I was showing them all of the beach area with the sun set up to.

You can see the point there in Orange where I’ve marked up the clip for a significant change in the music.

And at that point I have an excuse to start showing them.

Lots of boats.

You do it this way.

You’ve got proper synchronization between the music and the editing and the footage which is exactly what we’re going for.

Editing design principle number six to get the biggest impact from your very dramatical shots that you will have taken.

You want to head the xishun those at where the music has a crescendo a big beat drop where one of the significant changes occurs in the music.

This is where you have marked up the music for the chapter changes within it.

This will then amplify the dramatics that are within your already very impactful shot that you’ve taken.

So in this little example here you see near that orange marker there that’s where I start a shot which is one of the best flying shots I’ve got.

We’re doing a beautiful art flight pattern round this boat.

And at the same time it’s doing a cover reveal with a sun coming behind it.

That’s a very dramatical shot and its impact is amplified by the fact that I position that shot just where the music has a big check.

You’ve grouped your music.

You’ve then worked out how you’re going to sequence the clips together.

You then sequence those clips and synchronize them appropriately to the music.

You now have one of the final steps where you can apply some effects into the clips that you’ve got things such as transitions speed changes you may have some sharpening that kind of thing.

There is many things you can do here but we have one over arching design principle to follow any effects that you put in place to enhance not distract from the dramatic that is in that clip.

So these are useful sometimes to help strengthen the dramatics and prevent weakening that may be occurring due to some fault in the footage.

So you might have some flight erratics in your footage but you’ve decided to keep it in there anyway you can use effects sometimes to disguise those flighter attics.

For instance if you’ve got a urine twitch you could put in at that particular point a lens flare transition that would disguise the actual twitch.

The other way to look at this is to make sure that you minimally use any effects because if you over use them then it’s going to distract people from the dramatics and they’re just going to see the whizzing and the banging of the effect that you’ve put in.

Also similarly limit the effect types that you go for if you use more and more different types of effects.

People’s attention will be drawn to that and they forget to look at the dramatics that are within the footage which is why they’ve come to the show.

So there we have it seven different editing design principles to follow.

While we group our clip sequence them synchronized to the music and then add effects.
