Select useable clip and music

Once that’s done I need to create some events within the library.

Now events would be things such as a particular flying day that you went on and in the events you can store a number of different flight clips that will have come straight out of your camera.

So I’m going to make a new event here to do that.

I’m going to go file new events.

I’m going to give it a name.

Call it dredger in this particular case out when it makes the event I want it to.

Also at the same time create a new project now.

My end production is going to be at 30 frames per second.

This is so I can stake my GoPro camera footage I can slow it down to at least half speed without there being any loss in quality because computer tape that 30 friends for second straight from the GoPro footage it doesn’t have to interpolate make up any of the in between frames itself.

So I don’t want my new project AIST set on the first video clip.

Instead it’s going to be a custom setting.

I want it to be 10 ATP 1920 by 10 80 and 30 frames per second.

And I use the default settings for the audio.

I click okay.

And it is made my new event for me here with the project already in it.

You’ll also see that the project is technically open on the time line here.

I am now ready to start putting my flight footage into the event so I can start to skim through and decide what to keep and what to lose so I’m going to go off and find my raw footage files to then bring into Final Cut Pro X..

I find them in Finder and I could dump them straight into here in which case they would be a clip ready for me to start pulling into my project.

But as I have nothing in my project yet already I might as well just put them straight into the projects section.

This would then allow me to start immediately skimming over the this particular clip finding the good and the bad bits.

So.

As you can see you can very rapidly skim over the clip.

This is one of the reasons why I love.

Final Cut Pro X is it does the best job I think of all the software that’s out there being able to do this skimming thing.

And you need to a skim very quickly for our kind of footage because we’re constantly itching so much of it due to travelling to the thing that we’re going to film in the flight erratics and so on.

Initially I have snapping set to off.

Now that is very useful for when you are skimming because it doesn’t try to guess where you want to move the play head to.

And it lets you skim across the whole thing without it trying to snap to a particular point.

Let me explain that in a bit more detail.

So imagine that this clip was broken up into two bits.

So I’ve just cut it up there.

So you got an actual point there.

As I skim over here I can quite straightforwardly just move over here.

But if I had snapping set on and you see this little like on the bottom right corner down here is snapping.

Now that’s blue.

It means it’s on.

And what would happen is as I skimmed over the clip outfit as I got near to that breakpoint it would jump automatically at a magnetically link me into there.

That’s very useful for when you’re wanting to edit clips later on in end sequence and next to breaks in the music.

Right now I don’t want that to happen.

So I’m going to turn snapping off rather than clicking back on that blue icon again.

I’m going to press N which is the key for putting snapping on and off.

So now I’m ready and I’m also now going to do my head and undo that little break point I put in there.

We start off going towards the beginning of the clip and I’m looking the whole chunks of clips that I could use have no flight erratics in them or changes of motion.

That’s a nice little arkin shot that we’ve got going over there.

But it stops about there and you start I start to reposition a little bit as I change Flightplan.

So that’s a good point to make the break there.

So I need to change my pointer to the razor blade by pressing e.

You see it’s changed there and now click down and I have now got one possible usable clip.

I then go back to pressing a SO that I’m now back on the pointer.

I continue to skim around and so as I slide back there away from the treasure.

I’ve got a usable clip till I start to then basically go back down and it jerks about I’d never have that jerky bit in there so any tests do another break just before the jerks start so it’s just curving there so I stop the click and then go back and look at the rest of that jerky of it as a start to reposition myself.

What am I going to do.

I’m doing a little bit of a crab flight pattern there so I stop just before.

That’s just as that starts to start smoothly and how I could use that footage up to about that point there.

I’ll then press a.

Click that particular section which I no longer ever use so I can remove that.

So now I’ve got one clip two clips that are potential’s.

I’m now going to continue that krabbe flight pattern.

Okay.

We start to jerk around so just before it jerked round we’ve got a nasty little flight erratic.

I’ll click B and then I’m gonna snip out that bit.

All of that’s a bit jerky.

You start.

Pan back there quite nicely.

Okay so some of that’s quite usable so I’ll stop myself there.

This bit didn’t like so much so.

Press a again to then select it and then delete to get rid of it.

I’m doing a little bit of close proximity flight pattern there and then a nice fly over there.

What a great detail reveal.

Hanaway.

Oh and I saw her answer just before and started to turn round.

All of that is a usable longer clip so I’ve clicked be there to then move it.

I go back on a for my arrow.

I’ve got a little sweep round there and that’s a nice shot in itself.

The actual sweeping round so I will.

Basically keep all of that.

I do a little joke.

They’re not so good so just before I did that jerk.

I’ll go back to snip it.

So now.

I did that a little bit of a jerk there.

There we go.

I had a snip out that jerk A.

Remove it.

Remember you need to be not punching the sticks as if you were an ice skater.

Moving them gracefully.

So now I’m doing a nice flyer right.

That’s a great shot.

All of that has really high quality footage.

And I do an arc down into it as well.

So all of that’s very useful to sort of reposition myself about there.

A snippet.

This bit’s not so useful as I am rising up jerk about just that I’m start to flying over.

I’ll stop just before then.

That bit of footage.

Not so good.

And the great thing about this is you can just skim over it quite quickly.

If you do it quickly the jerkiness really stands out.

So you then know what to actually ditch.

One other point to note here is that if for instance this is another reason why Final Cut Pro X is so well designed that if I’d actually decided I snipped off a bit too much there.

I wanted to scan back of it.

I can just click on the selected clip to the end of it and you see the cursor changes slowly.

I can re extend it out so that it all comes back into play for me to have another look at.

And notice now because snapping isn’t on my cursor isn’t going straight to that point.

I can glide smoothly over it without any interference by the computer so I didn’t like that jerky bit.

No I definitely right to do it that after all.

So back to here.

Snip it out.

Clip again.

Select it pressed delete and it’s gone.

Okay so now that was about 6 minutes of flight footage and we got rid of all of the flight erratics

and we got through till about 3 and 15 seconds worth of music you can tell here 318.

And from that whole process we ended up with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 to us that if be 15 potentially usable clips for our End production.

Now we’re only going to try and create a 30 to 45 second production with this one type of footage.

You can see that in this particular case we’ve got rid of about 50 percent of our flying footage.

That’s fairly good to have 50 percent usable footage at the end of it so we’ve done quite well there.

Using our flight patterns to help generate good interesting footage.

So let’s assume that we have now selected the footage that could end up in our final production essentially through this initial process.

We’ve been getting rid of the dross.

The flight erratics the things that would never stay in there we may have given some thought as to whether the footage that doesn’t have flight erratics in it is actually still good enough to use or not.

In this particular example because it’s so spectacular almost any part of it could be used often at this stage you would also have say very long runs up a boring Beach and even though you were flying

perfectly you would still it’s that at this stage as well.

So let’s assume that that’s now done the next stage in the process is to go off and select our music.

Following the design principles around music selection that we discussed in the other lecture let’s assume that that’s already done as we can’t demonstrate that in software and then we’ll move on to stage

3. The editing process where I show you how to mark up that music.
